Haarlem

Haarlem is one of the most beautiful mediaeval cities in the Netherlands, situated on the river Spaarne. Amsterdam and the dunes, beaches and sea
are nearby. Haarlem has a well preserved historic center with of lot of
national monuments and a Great Market Square which is among the finest
in the country. Of old a city of culture. Haarlem has known a large number
of famous painters. The best known is Frans Hals. Many of his painting can
be seen in the Frans Hals Museum. Very special is also Teylers Museum, the
oldest museum in our country, from 1778. Time seems to have stopped here.

Haarlem is a relatively small city with only 155.000 inhabitants. Known to be one of the best cities for shopping in our country. You will also find a large number of nice and good restaurants and pubs.

Visiting Haarlem

A visit to Haarlem is not complete without a walk in the historic center, see map, around the Great Market Square and a visit to the Frans Hals Museum, Teylers Museum, the Great or St.-Bavochurch and one of the more than twenty almshouses.

Other important Haarlem monuments are the City Hall, the Guardhouse of the Citizen Soldiery and the Meat Halll. Outside the citycenter you would like to visit the County Hall and the Cathedral Basilica St. Bavo. Haarlem is a green city with some beautiful nineteenth century city parks like the Kenaupark and the Ramparts.
